JOHNSON COMMUNITY CEMETERY, aka
WOODLAWN BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY Parcel #35-10-23-0000-0400-0000.
Take HWY 20, 5.5 miles past red light in Interlachen to CR-21. Turn left
and go 2.5 miles to Johnson Community at CR 20-A. Cemetery is on the
right past the church on CR 21, 1/4 mile south of 20-A. Johnson was
settled by the John and Margaret Gillis Johnson family of North Carolina in
1853. Several Pioneer West Putnam citizens and several Confederate
veterans of the Civil War are buried here. KEUKA QUAD. N 29o
34.818 W 81o 58.431 (Maintained). We first visited this cemetery in order to
photograph the markers in January of 2007.
When we arrived on scene, we found that the church building
alongside, housed the “Community Church of God of Johnson”. Further study revealed that the Woodlawn
Baptist Church membership acquired larger facilities located around the corner
at 818 CR 20-A. There are three other
parcels associated with this site: 35-10-23-0000-0040-0000;
35-10-23-0000-0390-0000,
and 35-10-23-0000-0410-0000. In response to a query from a patron, we went out
in February 2018 to look for a couple of graves and create a new set of
pictures with a more modern camera. While
there, we noticed that the center of the cemetery, where the oldest graves
are located, has a large tree or shrub in the center of it that has gotten
out of control and has overgrown at least four to six graves. I photographed as best I could. I have kept the older photographs, and
then posted the new ones in these cases.
There are a couple of broken stones, which are
shown as intact in photos that I took in 2007. However there are better
photos posted on FindAGrave.com
in 2010. There is also a newer gazebo in the cemetery, which I photographed. I am currently posting the pictures and making
notes. This task is taking far longer
than anticipated. Thank you for your
patience. MEM. |
