YELVINGTON CEMETERY

Is comprised of two cemeteries, the 3RD MT.  TABOR MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY and the white cemetery.  Mt. Tabor is recorded in Deed Book 49 Page 12.   This is a Black cemetery that is still active.  Parcel #24-10-27-0000-0000-0001.   It lies at the southerly end of Yelvington Road.  Access is through a locked gate and lies south of the FP&L Power Corridor.   This cemetery is surrounded by lands belonging to John Browning.   SAN MATEO QUAD.  N 29o 37.218  W 81o 31.492.   (Neglected).

YELVINGTON WHITE CEMETERY is unrecorded and lies west of and adjacent to the Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, on property owned by John P.  Browning Jr. on Parcel #24-10-27-0000-0010-0000.  It may have started as a family cemetery for the family and laborers of Gideon Yelvington, a planter from Georgia, who arrived in the territory and claimed his land during the Second Spanish Period.

A survey of St. Johns County Cemeteries was conducted by the Church of the Latter Day Saints in 1947, and is on file at the St. Augustine Historical Society.  Yelvington lies at the intersection of the St. Johns, Putnam, and Flagler County lines.  Information from that survey is included because markers that existed in 1947 may not exist now.  However, any claims by the 1947 LDS Church survey that Gideon Yelvington came from England are totally false.   He is well documented in the ‘East Florida Papers’ of the Second Spanish Period in Florida, 1783-1821.

Directions are the same as for the 3rd MT.  TABOR CEMETERY.  Contact John Browning for permission to enter.  No more burials are being permitted on this site, although by Florida State Law, he must provide an easement for ingress and egress to and from the Mt. Tabor Cemetery, since it is still active.  So while the lands around these cemeteries have ‘NO TRESSPASSING’ signs all around, the gate that shuts off access to the dirt road passing by these cemeteries, does not.  Use your own discretion.

Also be mindful when you visit, that the land in the area is a hunting preserve.   SAN MATEO QUAD.  N 29o 37.231 W 81o 31.534.  (Abandoned).

Photographs posted of the Yelvington Family section were taken by Mary E. Murphy during a visit in the early 1980s; other photographs were taken April 18, 2009 and finished on April 19, 2009.

In preparing to lead three Yelvington cousins to the site this week, August 14, 2020, my husband and I have gone out to the cemetery twice so far, and have found that there are at least five burials that I was not aware of in 2009.  As soon as I can get clean, clear pictures, these names will be added.  That should come later this week.  Thank you for your patience.  MEM.
