ST. JOSEPH CEMETERY aka MT. PLEASANT Located
on the southwest corner of Crill Avenue and Westover Drive. Map Book I Page 111, Parcel #12-10-26-0000-0450-0000. Several of Palatka’s prominent Black
families are buried here. Even
though it is on the south side of Crill Avenue (HWY 20) opposite OAK HILL CEMETERY, it is not part of
Oak Hill and is not in the City limits.
At one time the cemetery was administered by a Board of Trustees,
possibly named the St. Joseph Board of Trustees. It also does not help the confusion factor
that the Black section of Westview Cemetery appears to have been referred to
as “St. Joseph” in city directories.
At any rate, the Board disbanded over time and the cemetery has
fallen into neglect even though occasional interments still occur. Keep Putnam Beautiful, Inc.,
the Putnam
County 4-H Club, and other service organizations have taken this
cemetery on as a ‘cleanup project’ from time to time. PALATKA QUAD. N 49o 38.44 W 81o
39.566. (Neglected). NOTE:
This cemetery has never been surveyed completely. What appears below is the result of
listings that I have compiled during the various cleanup dates. The latest cleanup was Wednesday,
November 10, 2004. The turnout was
outstanding and much was accomplished.
There is a good possibility that Home
Depot will adopt this cemetery as one of their community projects. Many thanks go to Donna Yochem and Home
Depot for their wonderful efforts.
Putnam Correctional Institution provided two inmate work squads for
the project, the County, and several interested volunteers also lent a hand
and in one case, a tractor—ridden to the site at a distance of 14 miles one
way. A sincere heartfelt T*H*A*N*K*
Y*O*U* goes to everyone. If I have
missed anyone, please forgive me. See
this link for the article
appearing in the Palatka Daily News on November 11, 2004. NOTE:
On August 3, 2005, TEAM DEPOT came through again. Team Depot, a volunteer group of Home
Depot employees, and members of Palatka Public Works, performed ‘heroics’ in
cleaning this cemetery. The results
are fantastic. Many THANKS and appreciation
go to all who participated.
There
are now more than 516 records in this list.
With another pass or two, it should be complete—or as complete as
possible considering the number of unmarked graves and depressions. I am also working out a rough plat of the
cemetery as a ‘finding aid’. The work
is continuing as time permits. [Mary
E. Murphy, Putnam County Archivist, Ret.] |
