RODMAN SIDE CAMP CEMETERY “Located near the center of Kenilworth S/D
MB 2 P 4, in the vicinity of Block 60. Take CR 310 west of SR 19
approximately 3 miles to Florida Road on right. Turn right on Florida
Road, cross Porter Street, and continue approximately 1/2 mile to a barbed
wire fence and gate. Do not go through gate, but turn left and
go down road outside of fence approximately 900 feet to 1st grave area on
right side of road. This site is approximately 90 feet from the road
and contains three grave headstones with no distinguishable writing on any
of the markers. They are close to the only palm tree in the
vicinity. The second grave is on right side of road and across
fence approximately 210 feet north of the first group. This
grave has four metal poles and a fence around it. Continue down road
approximately 400 feet to cemetery on left of road. Three graves are
next to road and a fourth grave, to the right and beyond the first three.
This group of graves is located just before what looks like the old Ocala to
Palatka railroad bed, possibly the Ocklawaha Valley RR. There may be
other graves in the area. The
above statement is the report submitted to Tallahassee by the 1999 Cemetery
Task Force, referring to the main Rodman
Cemetery. (And is the opening statement on my Rodman Cemetery
page.) They made no mention of a Side Camp Cemetery. Likely they
didn’t know about it. It is possible that one of the above GPS
coordinates refer to this cemetery. The
work presented here was created by FindAGrave
member, L. M. Shiver Thomas, who graciously gave me permission to use
it in this Project. There are no markers existing today.
Therefore, Shiver Thomas pored laboriously over dozens of Putnam County
Death Certificates, proving the existence of this cemetery. So far as is known, this is a small Cemetery for the Black Community at Rodman, most of whom, worked for the Rodman Lumber Company. Many of the currently known interments are babies and toddlers. Several ‘residents’ were killed by the Spanish Influenza pandemic. Several others were felled by Malarial fever—which could be another name for the Spanish Flu. One man was killed in a house fire. Many
thanks go to L. M. Shiver Thomas for this information. |

courtesy to researchers. It’s inclusion in
no way implies that the people listed as living in Rodman in 1919, were in fact
buried in one of the ‘lost’ cemeteries.
They may have moved elsewhere since the publication of the directory.
