MT TAMO BAPTIST CEMETERY

“Parcel #05-42-27-0000-0390-0000, west 4 acres of E 1/2 of NW 1/4 of NW 1/4 of NE I/4.  Appears to be accessed off Broward Avenue South of Pomona Park, but access is uncertain and needs to be field checked.  Could not find deed reference for transfer of title out of Deed Book 18 Page 294 William B. & Nettie Palmer to C.  Sanderson King and Caroline Griff, his mother.  CRESCENT CITY QUAD.  N 29o .364 W 81o 35.619.  (Maintained).” – From the Property Appraiser’s Office.

At least that is the information that I had been using trying to find this cemetery.  It turned out that the parcel number was wrong.  It really is 05-12-27-0000-0390-0000.  This cemetery has never been surveyed.  Regardless of the information provided by the Property Appraiser’s Office, this present cemetery had its origins when Jackson P. Browning and his wife Mary donated four acres of their homesteaded 40-acre farm for use as a cemetery.  An earlier site in the Greenville area of Pomona Park became unsuitable due to a rising water table.  This information is according to an article written for the book, Our Journey Through Time, Pomona Park, 1874-1994, by Nancy Cooley Alvers and Opal Walker Middleton.  To read the article click here.

Driving directions are to go to Pomona Park via HWY 17 South, past Main Street, the Post Office, and the convenience store.  Look for Broward Avenue South to your right.  It is easy to miss.  Turn right and go past Mt. Tamo Church on your right.  You are looking for a little trail on your right named “Echo Trail”.  You will see what looks like two diverging dirt driveways, and a sign that says “Turners 101 Echo Trail.”  If you are not observant, you will miss a poorly kept sign before that, which says “MT. TAMO CEMETERY”.   Take the right hand leg of the “Y” and go about an eighth of a mile and you will find the cemetery.

My husband and I started photographing this cemetery Sunday, July 31, 2005, when a summer thunderstorm and a well-placed lightning strike inside the cemetery, dictated the need for a hasty departure.  We will return and finish at another time.

October 3, 2005—This cemetery is now essentially complete.  We have been here several times trying to photograph and get the information as correct as possible.  There are several stones [markers] that are unreadable for one reason or another.  Also, the way the existing markers are laid out suggest that there are many unmarked burials in this cemetery.  Now, all that remains is for me to finish linking the pictures that I took.  Thank you for your patience.  Mary E. Murphy-Hoffmann.
