OTHERS

I could not think of anything else to name this list.  If you have any suggestions, I am “all ears”.  This listing is for those of our departed brethren, whose remains were handled in “other ways” than the traditional cemetery.  They were part of our lives and history also, and deserve to be remembered.

This list had it’s start when I was the Putnam County Archivist, and the death certificates for those indigent and cremation burials that the County took care of, were sent to me for filing.  I rounded out the matter by searching the Palatka Daily News Obituaries, which were then housed as part of the BassCapitol database.

In 2004, the PDN migrated their software and files to another server and service, so files occurring prior to April 2004, do not exist online anymore.  The listings here are the result of diligent online searching between January 1, 2004, and the current date, using the search terms:  “ashes scattered”, “anatomical”, “no services”, "cremains", "cremation services", "body donated", and as many other similar terms that I can think of.

Please understand that this is by no means a complete list, and is very likely the most incomplete of all on this site, simply because I cannot know for sure where the cremated remains actually end up.  Most of the time the family has the custody, but after that, there is no telling what happens to them.

At the same time, as the rate of cremations are increasing, more and more instances are happening where the cremains of our beloved family members are ending up in storage units that are becoming abandoned, as the families are forced to move and cannot maintain their rent for the unit.  A group, the Missing In America Project, or MIAP, has formed to: “locate, identify and inter the unclaimed cremated remains of American veterans through the joint efforts of private, state and federal organizations. To provide honor and respect to those who have served this country by securing a final resting place for these forgotten heroes.”   Click the link for more information on this worthy project.

Several of the folks in this list loved the oceans and were in one of the services, such as US Coast Guard or US Navy, and had their ashes scattered in one of the seas.  I originally set up a media memorial to the first member of this list, Raymond “Rip” Page.  Since then, others have joined this list.  I wish to dedicate the following musical tribute to anyone who has served their Country upon the ocean.  Thank you for your service:

A TRIBUTE FROM ONE SAILOR TO ANOTHER.  GODSPEED.  MEM-H.  “Sail the Whole World Round, by Bob Brown and the BARQUENTONES—“Crew of the ELISSA”.  Used by permission.

NOTE:  You must have Windows Media Player on board to hear this song.  If your Firewall or other virus protection program does not allow you to hear it, please enable it to do so.  This is a special tribute to several of our Honored Veterans.  Thank you, MEM-H.

Contact me at EMAIL for further details  Thank you  Mary E Murphy, Putnam County Archivist (Ret)
