NORWALK CEMETERY

Owned by Putnam County.  Parcel #30-12-26-0000-0310-0000 (MB 1 P 84).  Located at 145 Cemetery Road.  Take SR 19 approximately 4 miles south of the Barge Canal Bridge to Cemetery Road on the left.  Turn left and go approximately ½ mile.  Cemetery is on the right.  It has been vandalized in the past.  The County has erected a chain link fence around the perimeter.  Here is a picture of the gate.

The old Norwalk community was settled by people from Maine and New York in 1876.  At one time more than 250 people lived in the district.  It was situated near the St. Johns River upstream from Palatka, with which there was twice daily communication by steamer.  Within Norwalk were two churches, a good public school, two sawmills, a tannery, wagon shop, harness shop, two blacksmiths and a post office.

This community was established as a farming community (citrus groves and pine timberland).  The groves were frozen out in the great freezes of 1894-95 and the depletion of the virgin reserve stands of yellow pine timber more than anything contributed to the demise of the community.  By 1919 only a handful of people remained.  WELAKA QUAD N 29o 25.334 W 81o 43.774.  (Maintained/Neglected).

This list is provided as a courtesy to researchers.  It's inclusion in no way implies that the people listed as living in the Norwalk area in 1919, were in fact buried in the area.  They may have moved elsewhere since the publication of the directory.
