MT. ZION METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY

First Methodist Church, Jacksonville.   Deed Book 212 Page 54.   Parcel #23-12-26-0000-0100-0000.   This was founded as the Mt. Zion Methodist Church, and the cemetery lies on the former church grounds.  It may also be known as FRUITLAND CEMETERY or TUCKER BURIAL GROUND.  It may also be confused with the BEULAH BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, which is nearby.   Today, it is on the Putnam County Property Appraiser’s rolls as the Tucker Burial Ground LLC, 221 Pine Cone Trail, Ormond Beach, FL 32174-4914.

It dates to around the turn of the century, with some headstones in the 1800s, mostly Applebys and Tuckers are buried here.   The Putnam County Archives has an inventory of this cemetery, as well as the minutes of the church.   It was disbanded after the turn of the century.  There are probably many more buried here than we suspect.

Take HWY 17 south into Satsuma.   Turn right on 309 to Fruitland.   Turn left on 308.  Go 3/4 mile to Beulah Church Road.   Turn left.   Go approximately 7/10 of a mile to Rainbow Road.   Turn left, go past Rainbow Lane, a distance of approximately 1/4 mile.  The cemetery is on the left in a heavily wooded area.  There is a road into the cemetery but this has been blocked by three fallen trees.  This is an old pioneer cemetery.  WELAKA QUAD.  N 29o 26.350 W 81o 38.212 (Maintained).

Photographed April 15 and 18, 2009 by Mary E. Murphy.  The Eliza Stokes Tucker monument was photographed in 1999.  At this month’s photograph session, there was no trace or sign of it, or hint as to where it had been located.
