This appears to be a
completely unknown cemetery either to the 1999 Cemetery Task Force, or myself,
and most likely the stalwart citizens who surveyed cemeteries in 1976 as part
of the Bicentennial Project, which is on file in the Palatka Library. This Project has utilized almost all of the
information existing in those files. I
had thought that this cemetery might be listed under another name in the Index Page, but that appears to not be the case.
I learned of this cemetery
when attending a meeting of the Putnam County Genealogical Society, June 2,
2011, for which the program was a presentation on improvements to the historic Sister Spring Cemetery nearby. [I must get permission from the presenters
before I will give their names.] But the
lady spoke of another cemetery belonging to her church, Mason Chapel Baptist, that had been vandalized when gas lines were laid,
which uprooted and destroyed many of the existing markers. She also stated that some of the elders in
her family, who knew where people were buried, and who they were—and kept
notes—had passed on, and as happens so often, those records are missing, and
probably destroyed.
Saturday, June 4, 2011, I
have an appointment with this lady to go and see the cemetery and photograph
and study what I can.
