HANCOCK CEMETERY

Located in the S 1/8 of the SW 1/4 of Section 4, Township 10 S, Range 26 E approximately 1/4 mile east of CR 309-C on property owned by Putnam County Port Authority.  Assessed as Parcel #04-10-26-0000-0010-0000, cemetery is 43.5 feet x 114 feet.

From the junction of HWY 19 and HWY 100 in Palatka, go west on HWY 100 a distance of 3 miles to the Springside Community.  At Springside turn left (South) onto CR 309-C (Paved Francis-Springside Road) and go South on 309-C a distance of 1.9 miles to a private dirt road.  Turn East.  The cemetery is approximately 1300 feet east of CR 309-C and approximately 110 feet north of private road.  PALATKA QUAD N 29o 38.924 W 81o 42.498.  (At one time, a fence surrounded it.  County crews have recently cleaned it, but the fence has not been replaced).

It is not known definitely if this cemetery is a private family cemetery or a community cemetery.  The Hancock family is prominent among the burials here.   Hancock Family Group Photo.

In an earlier time, this cemetery was well maintained.  It was fenced and enclosed with red cedar plantings, and several of these are still in evidence as large trees scattered along the perimeter.  However, over the years this cemetery has been vandalized, and now appears to be totally abandoned.  Several gravesites within their enclosure have been ‘lost’ and it was with some difficulty that a total of 25 were identified.  According to Mr. C. S. Hoskins, the former owner (and whose wife’s maiden name is Isabella Hancock), there are more than 50 burials in this little cemetery, but unfortunately, today only four gravesites have headstones with names and dates.

Since the Board of County Commissioners purchased the property this cemetery is located on in 1999 for development into an industrial park, this cemetery is in immediate danger of being bulldozed and destroyed.
