GETHSEMANE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY

Parcel #12-09-27-0000-0100-0010.   This cemetery may also have been known as Dowling River Cemetery.  This cemetery is located in a field belonging to the Barnes Farm.  It is probably best reached by taking SR 207 east, just past the Putnam-St. Johns County line, and turn left onto the old Palatka-Hastings Road at Bulls-Hit Ranch.  Proceed west to County Line Road on your right.  Turn right and follow the road to a 90o right angle turn.  At this turn, you will see two dirt, field lanes, one bearing left, and the other centrally located between the left lane and the pavement of the County Line Road.  Take this center lane and carefully follow it through the field about ¾ of a mile to a pretty, little hammock with trees and grass on your right.  This is the cemetery.

This is a very old Black cemetery with many more unmarked gravesites than marked ones as evidenced by all the depressions and mounds there.  What appears to be an attractive lawn lying alongside the area with markers, in reality contains dozens and dozens of unmarked graves.  These souls are known but to God.  There is also a strong possibility that many more graves lie in the wooded areas surrounding the clearing, than the three that we found.

Someone has done a masterful job of putting up information on ‘FindAGrave.com’.  Thanks to him/her, I have been able to add more information.  Some of the information may/may not pertain to the unmarked graves.

Researchers interested in this cemetery will be interested also in Hastings-Masonic Cemetery, which is located just east of the Putnam/St. Johns County line  on SR 207.  For Felder relatives, check out the Black section of the Federal Point Cemetery.

*Unfortunately, on or about September 3, 2015, Ms. Shaquierra Pinckney of Daytona Beach Florida, was found murdered in this cemetery, by the caretaker/Pastor, Christopher Coleman, of Coleman Mortuary.  Ms Pinckney is not buried here, but will forever be associated with this cemetery.  My husband and I are praying that her murderer finds justice, and that her family finds peace.  The star refers to her listing at the bottom of the page.  Respectfully submitted.  Thank you!
