BRADDOCK CEMETERY aka
MASON-DENVER CEMETERY Owned by Ada Thorn, aka This marker is to commemorate THE BATTLE OF BRADDOCK'S FARM, and gives an overview of the battle of approximately 100 Union soldiers, versus 57 Southern soldiers under the command of Capt. J. J. Dickison near the location of the marker. The marker was erected by the FLORIDA CONFEDERATION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC SITES, which has taken the care and cleanup of this cemetery on as a project. This is a private cemetery that was on the former farm of James Aldrich Braddock, who is buried on this site. This cemetery is located approximately 100 yards off the paved road behind and to the left of the historical marker. NOTE: This cemetery “inherited” some of
the Orange Mills MAYS--SIMPKINS--COLE
CEMETERY markers in 1971-72, when its owners wanted their property
for development. Many of these stones were moved to the ST. JOHN
THE EVANGELIST CEMETERY for storage, but many large base stones and
fragments remain, including fencing. Maintained as best as possible by
FCPHS. Recently bush-hogged and stones cleaned by Lynn A.
Hoffmann and Mary E. Murphy-Hoffmann on February 19, 2002, and again
July 2002. The latest cleanup was
February 8, 2003—with the best turnout ever!! – MEM-H. 2017--I believe that the FCPHS group is
no longer active, at least their website is not, and we haven’t heard from
any of the members in years. At this
time, I have no idea of the condition of the cemetery. When I next go back to As promised, my husband and I visited on
Wednesday July 26, 2017, and found the cemetery in a very clean
condition. This was reported to me by
a great-great grandson, of James Aldrich Braddock, located in this cemetery,
James Alton Braddock, who contacted me and reported the condition of the
cemetery. But sometimes one has to go
and see for themselves. Sadly, two of the existing markers have
fallen, or been pushed over, but James Aldrich Braddock’s monument still
stands tall and proud. Updated
pictures will be posted soon. Many thanks and kudos go
to the unknown groups of people who are keeping this cemetery up. Yes, some of the Mays monuments base stones still are there. |
