DEWITT CEMETERY (SATSUMA HEIGHTS)

Is owned by A. M. Dewitt via Tax Deed Book G Page 443.  Parcel #39-11-26-8470-0330-0010.   Contact person for more information is George Winch.  See the Property Appraiser’s information at the link..  Take US 17 south through Satsuma, turn right on CR 309.   Cross the railroad and turn right on First Street, 3/4 mile to First Avenue.   The cemetery is on the N/W corner of First Street and First Avenue.   This is a ten acre tract of land.

This cemetery was visited by the Cemetery Task Force in 1999.  Their report follows:

“Graves were found north of the NE corner of a large cleared area in the south 1/3 of the tract (see aerial photo).   The grave nearest the cleared area is that of Nolie Sheffield, B.  Dec 15, 1902 and D.  July 12, 1952.   The first GPS reading was for this grave.”

“Another site was found north of the first grave about 100--150 feet.   This site has one headstone base.   The marker was not located, but is probably near by buried under leaves and debris.  The site is marked with 4 galvanized posts about 4 feet tall, and there is a roll of old field fence at the site.   The second GPS reading is for this site.”

“There were several depressions in the area that indicates other unmarked graves.  SATSUMA QUAD.  N 29o 33.665 W 81o 40.008 and N 29o 33.691 W 81o 40.038.  (Neglected/Abandoned).”

The 1919 Putnam County Directory lists a Henry and Nolie Sheffield, living in Satsuma, employed as ‘Laborers’.

Here is the ‘Satsuma Heights’ entry from the 1919 Putnam County Directory.  In that Henry and Nolie Sheffield were denoted as ‘Colored’, suggests that this cemetery was for the African-American residents of this area, and the cemetery we know as Satsuma, or Satsuma Heights Cemetery was reserved for the ‘White’ residents.  This is strictly an *educated guess* on my part.  If anyone has more authoritative knowledge, please let me know.

This list is provided as a courtesy to researchers.  It's inclusion in no way implies that the people listed as living in the Satsuma area in 1919, were in fact buried in the area.  They may have moved elsewhere since the publication of the directory.
