TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH MEMORIAL GARDENS

 

Recently I learned via FindAGrave.com (Thank you!!), that the Trinity Episcopal Church of Melrose, Florida, has a columbarium similar to that of St Mark’s Episcopal Church in Palatka.

 

Melrose is an *interesting* anomaly in our County.  The county lines of Putnam and Alachua counties divides the unincorporated town in half. Or to quote a character in “The Music Man”, “It runs right down the middle of the street!”  Furthermore, the County lines of Clay and Bradford Counties lie about a half mile or so north of the main traffic light on SR 26.  So the Family Researcher must consult the records of all FOUR counties for their family information. 

 

It is also confusing that the residents and businesses all have Putnam County mailing addresses no matter which side of which county line they are physically located.  So in keeping with my policy of including cemeteries within a mile of the Putnam County line, because over the years lines have moved or been ‘tweaked’, this one is included.

 

The above paragraph was written when I still thought that SR 21 was the boundary between Alachua and Putnam Counties.  After fruitlessly searching Alachua County land records for information, and getting nowhere, I searched in Putnam County and there it was.  The County Line falls somewhere along Centre Street.  Because Centre Street is on an angle opposed to the actual County Line, parts of Centre Street are firmly in Putnam County, and parts are firmly in Alachua County.  There is about a three or four block stretch, where Centre Street and the County line actually agree with each other.

 

Trinity Episcopal Church is located on the Putnam County side of the County Line, in the Melrose Historic District, at 204 SR 26.  Parcel #18-09-23-5700-0000-0840.  It was founded on the fifth Sunday of July 1881, according to their website, which can be viewed here.  They also have a Facebook page.  Neither site mentions the columbarium.

 

This list is compiled from one entry found on FindAGrave.com, and three online obituaries.  As soon as possible I will go and photograph and get a complete list. 

 

I went today, July 4, 2017, and photographed.  It is NOT similar to St Marks, where every internee has a granite tablet marking the location of the cremains.  Instead, there is a garden area, where presumably, the cremains are inured, and two bronze tablets on the wall of a nearby building listing the ‘residents’.  The list follows.  The garden area has a bench, four granite corner posts, and a Celtic Cross.  All are donated by members of the church.  Plaque 1  Plaque 2.  I took pictures of the garden area, but with our recent rains, the grass was tall and the pictures didn’t turn out.
